About — The artist
Coroner is a Swiss thrash metal band from Zurich, active from 1983 to 1996 and again since 2010. To date, the band has released six studio albums: R.I.P. (1987), Punishment for Decadence (1988), No More Color (1989), Mental Vortex (1991), Grin (1993) and Dissonance Theory (2025).
Coroner's music combines elements of thrash, classical music, avant-garde music, progressive rock and jazz, and later in their career, industrial metal and groove metal, with a raspy vocal style. With their increasingly complex, progressive-tinged thrash style, they have been called the “Rush of thrash metal”, and alongside Voivod and Watchtower, the band is credited with helping to bring about the technical thrash metal subgenre in the mid-to-late 1980s.
Coroner's sound then evolved toward a more polished production and a more progressive style on albums such as No More Color, Mental Vortex, Grin and Dissonance Theory, the latter two also incorporating groove metal characteristics. Their early work strongly influenced the death metal scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly the technical death metal subgenre.
