Andrés Marín - Desierto

Flamenco dancer Andrés Marín is premiering in the Community of Madrid on 15 October in the Sala Verde of Teatros del Canal, as part of the XXI Suma Flamenca 2026 festival, a show in which he offers a poetic reconstruction of Seville's Alameda de Hércules.

The Alameda de Hércules has a history closely tied to the artistic development of the city. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, it was one of the major meeting points for cante, with its old glass kiosks, dirt floors and gatherings in places such as Siete Puertas. The work moves away from that well-known image to seek another Alameda, one that is more abstract and intimate: that of the shadows left behind after time erased its ancient traces.

Solitude thus becomes the true landscape of the piece. The missing statues, empty spaces and accumulated silence act as elements of a scenography that speaks of the passage of time and oblivion. In this exchange with tradition, the voice of José de la Tomasa, known as "El Último Faraón", appears, bringing to the production the living memory of a flamenco tradition that Marín does not seek to reproduce, but rather to subject to a new perspective.

Sand also takes on a central role and, rather than literally representing a desert landscape, functions as a material that transforms the space and resignifies the performer's relationship with the stage to generate a territory of exploration. Indeed, everything seems to lead towards a question: What remains of an environment when its protagonists, sounds and symbols disappear? Andrés Marín responds by creating a place where flamenco, memory and silence meet to speak of the passage of time, absence and oblivion.

Born in Seville in 1969, Andrés Marín is one of contemporary flamenco's most unique dancers and choreographers. His work stems from cante and classical flamenco tradition, but subjects them to personal research that moves away from conventional forms. C
