Ferial de Calaveras

As part of Canal Hispanidad, Teatros del Canal is hosting the Spanish premiere of Ferial de Calaveras on 9, 10 and 11 October in the Sala Roja Concha Velasco. A scenic tribute to Mexican identity and the artistic legacy of José Guadalupe Posada, the celebrated engraver from Aguascalientes whose iconic calaveras left a permanent mark on the country's popular culture.

Created in 1994, the show combines dance, music and narrative in a large-scale production that champions cultural syncretism, collective memory and popular creativity. Through a contemporary language, the proposal revisits the images and symbols immortalised by Posada, establishing a dialogue between 19th-century imagery and the concerns of the present.

Going beyond folkloric recreation, Ferial de Calaveras offers an artistic reflection on death as an inseparable part of life, turning the stage into a space where tradition and modernity intertwine to renew the meaning of one of the great emblems of Mexican culture.

Directed by Rubén Isauro del Toro Vázquez, the production features a programme of choreography and songs including Hoy es el día de muertos, Calavera Catrina, La llorona, Cumbia de los muertos and Son de los difuntos.
