Rafael de León. El otro del 27 is not only the title of this show; it is a fair historical and artistic claim. For decades, the immense shadow of his success as a lyricist and author of the greatest coplas of Spanish song eclipsed his legitimate standing: that of a true and fundamental poet of the Generación del 27.

Today, freed from the prejudices that for a time surrounded copla, contemporary culture increasingly reclaims the figure of Rafael de León. His work represents the avant-garde, luminous, cosmopolitan and free outlook that defined that generation. As we delve into his poetic anthology, the astonishment at the profound quality of his texts has been the driving force behind this project. The artist Juan Valderrama has set to music a carefully chosen selection of unpublished poems, revealing on stage a new, intimate and overwhelming dimension of Rafael.

Mariano Peña masterfully embodies the multifaceted figure of the protagonist. Through him, we discover the aristocrat and the bohemian, the gentleman and the intellectual, the successful lyricist and the silenced poet. Alongside him, the work traces his youth and his close relationship with Federico García Lorca —played by Juan Valderrama himself, as well as his life encounters with iconic figures such as Margarita Xirgu, Imperio Argentina, Concha Piquer, maestro Quiroga or Miguel de Molina, all of them embodied through the versatile and brilliant performances of Roko, Carlos de Austria and Guillem Calafí.

Written and directed by Santiago Sánchez and Víctor Lucas, the audience does not come to see a recital of past glories.
