Rey Lear

Lluís Homar stars in the new Rey Lear, directed by Declan Donnellan, premiering at Teatro del Soho CaixaBank

Rey Lear is a play about the succession crisis. In other words: how can an older generation gracefully make way for the new one? It is the gravest of wars, the generational war, when the younger generation feels the need to sacrifice the older one because it does not yield with grace.

The next production by Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, LAZONA, Cheek by Jowl, Teatro de la Abadía and Teatro San Martín de Buenos Aires premieres at Teatro del Soho CaixaBank. Lluís Homar plays Lear in this new version by the renowned British director Declan Donnellan, adapted together with Nick Ormerod. The cast is completed by Rebeca Matellán, Manuel Moya, Alfredo Noval, Goizalde Núñez, Irene Serrano, Antonio Prieto, Prince Ezeanyim, Alberto Gómez Taboada, Jorge Basanta, Manuel Pico and Miriam Queba.

It is an intensely political play about the individual's relationship with themselves, with other members of their family and with the State. It shows how the family is not only the place where one learns to love but also the place where one learns to hate. It is about sibling rivalry. There are three sisters and two brothers set against one another.

Above all, the play articulates the great theme of nothingness, which looms like a huge rock around Shakespeare's work, particularly his later plays. "Nothing will come of nothing," says Lear, when Cordelia remains silent when asked to express her love.
