Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez

A concert by Cuban jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez and Cuban percussionist, singer and dancer Pedrito Martinez, presented at KOKO in London as a duo performance.

Alfredo Rodriguez is a Cuban jazz pianist born in Havana in 1985, who debuted in 2006 and released his first album, Sounds of Space, in 2012. Pedrito Martinez is a Cuban percussionist, singer and dancer born in Havana in 1973, specialising in Cuban rumba and Afro-Cuban folkloric music. He settled in the United States in 1998, and is a santería priest.

Both musicians began their careers in Havana before moving to the United States, where each developed a personal approach that combines the music of Cuba with other influences. Their musical backgrounds differ, and the source material notes that this contrast gives the pair a natural rapport when they play together.

Their first duo recording, Duologue, was announced for release in 2019 on Mack Avenue Records. According to the published description, it explores a range of moods, drawing on Cuban classics, joint original compositions and several less expected choices. The concert at KOKO is a duo performance by the two artists, with no further line-up given.
