Beth Gibbons

Beth Gibbons, the singer and songwriter best known as the voice of Portishead, performs at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow. The concert brings the artist's solo work to a live audience.

Beth Gibbons formed Portishead in Bristol in the early 1990s, and the group's albums Dummy and Portishead helped define the trip-hop style. As a singer, Gibbons has also released solo work, including the album Out of Season in 2002 and Lives Outgrown in 2024, which places the voice and the songwriting at the centre of the music. The sound draws on a melancholic, orchestral and folk-tinged palette, with a strong debt to the torch songs and sparse arrangements of earlier decades.

The Barrowland Ballroom is a concert and performance venue at 242 the Gallowgate, in the east end of Glasgow, and it has hosted live music for many years. The night suits listeners who follow Portishead or Gibbons's solo recordings and want to hear the songs performed in a live setting. Full details of the stage arrangement are not yet clear, so the evening is best approached as a chance to hear the solo repertoire in person.
