Overview
A revival of Rent, the musical created by Jonathan Larson, staged at the Tom Stoppard Theatre in London. The production returns the work to the West End for a new audience.
Rent was created by Jonathan Larson and follows a group of young artists in New York City's East Village. Its story takes in love, friendship, identity and ambition, set against the HIV/AIDS crisis of the time. The musical is adapted from Puccini's opera La Bohème, and its score draws on rock.
The work first opened off-Broadway in 1996 before moving to Broadway, where it went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and several Tony Awards. Its direct storytelling and rock-based music are often cited as having influenced musical theatre for younger audiences.
This London production is presented as a new revival, bringing the piece back to the West End at the Tom Stoppard Theatre, a venue that hosts concerts and shows in the city.
