Amadeus

A revival of Peter Shaffer's play Amadeus at the Noel Coward Theatre, in which Michael Sheen plays Salieri and Callum Scott Howells plays Mozart. The production is directed by Jeremy Herrin.

Shaffer's play is set in Vienna in 1820, when the composer Antonio Salieri, respected and successful, makes a confession about his rivalry with the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The story follows Salieri's jealousy of Mozart's gift, which he regards as divine, and his calculated campaign against the man he both admires and resents. The production is described as the first major revival of the play in over a decade, and the music of Mozart runs through the drama.

Michael Sheen takes the role of Salieri opposite Callum Scott Howells as Mozart, in a production directed by Jeremy Herrin. Sheen's previous stage and screen work includes The Passion and Nye, and Howells has appeared in It's A Sin and Cabaret. The source notes that the two leading actors are both Welsh, taking on these roles for the first time together.

The Noel Coward Theatre is a London venue for concerts and shows. The production is a straight theatre staging of the play, with the score drawing on well-known works by Mozart. Those interested in the drama of rivalry, faith and ambition may find the subject of particular interest.
