About — The artist
Jamiroquai (pronounced: [dʒəˈmɪɹəkwaɪ]) is a British acid jazz and funk band, from London, England. Fronted by singer Jay Kay, they carved out a place for themselves in the capital in the early 1990s, within the then-booming acid jazz movement. Jamiroquai quickly stood out among the bands of the era (Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Galliano and Corduroy). The band achieved worldwide fame while continuing to evolve their sound. They have released eight studio albums over the course of their career, the most recent being Automaton, released in 2017.
The name Jamiroquai is a portmanteau: « jam » is a jazz term referring to musical improvisation, and « iroquai » refers to a Native American tribe, the Iroquois.
