Kali Malone: Burning Song

A live performance by Kali Malone, the American composer and organist, presented at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. The evening is built around the composer's long-form drone work.

Kali Malone is an American composer and organist whose work centers on slowly unfolding drones, often written for the pipe organ. The music draws on minimalism and on tuning systems based on the harmonic series and just intonation, so that sustained tones are shaped by small shifts in pitch and overtone balance rather than by melody or rhythmic drive.

Burning Song is presented under Kali Malone's name at Grace Cathedral, the Episcopal cathedral on Nob Hill. The building hosts exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year, and this concert places the composer's sustained, organ-based language within that setting.

The program will appeal most to listeners who follow contemporary organ music, drone and experimental composition, and to visitors interested in the cathedral's cultural programming. Anyone new to Kali Malone's work will find the music's pacing and its reliance on long sustained sounds the clearest guide to what to expect.
