Kool Keith, Awol One

A rap bill pairing Kool Keith, the New York rapper and producer behind several landmark underground hip-hop records, with the rapper Awol One. The show takes place at Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood.

Kool Keith is an American rapper who came up in New York and is best known as a member of Ultramagnetic MCs, whose 1988 album Critical Beatdown is a central document of late-1980s hip-hop. Under the alter ego Dr. Octagon, Keith released Dr. Octagonecologyst in 1996, an album built on surreal, character-driven rhymes over experimental production. Keith's solo career spans several decades of albums in that same off-center vein.

Awol One is a rapper sharing the bill, and the pairing places two MCs from the underground rap tradition on one program.

Whisky A Go Go is a club on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood that hosts concerts and shows. The night suits listeners interested in underground hip-hop and in the lyrical approach that defined Keith's earliest and most widely cited records.
