Madama Butterfly is a classic opera from the standard repertoire, presented by Washington National Opera. The story is set in Nagasaki: Cio-Cio-San, a young woman, marries the American naval officer Pinkerton, who leaves her soon after the wedding, and the opera follows her long wait for his return.

The drama turns on a marriage across cultures and its tragic consequences, and the title role's arc from hope to despair carries the evening. The production suits those drawn to classic opera and to stories of love, loyalty and loss.

The performance takes place at DAR Constitution Hall, a Washington venue that hosts concerts and shows. Washington National Opera's production brings this work to the District for a run of several dates on this visit to Washington, D.C.
