About — The artist
Caifanes is a Mexican rock band formed in Mexico City in 1986. The group achieved commercial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The original line-up comprised Saúl Hernández (vocals and guitar), Sabo Romo (bass), Alfonso André (drums) and Diego Herrera (keyboards and saxophone). Alejandro Marcovich joined later as lead guitarist. Caifanes' style can be described as a blend of British new wave, progressive rock and Latin percussion, with deep, gloomy lyrics influenced by Latin and Mexican Spanish, and with Saúl Hernández's distinctive vocal style. Members of Caifanes have cited The Cure, The Beatles and King Crimson as important influences. Adrian Belew produced their third studio album, El Silencio, and made a guest appearance on the track Piedra.
The name «Caifanes» is reportedly derived from the slang of Mexican pachucos (zoot suiters) of the 1940s, «cae fine». Its English equivalent would be «cool dude». The word has also been used to describe the proverbial Mexican pachuco, a delinquent or marginalised figure.
