Formed in Jamestown, New York, in the early 1980s, 10,000 Maniacs built its sound around the vocals of Natalie Merchant, who fronted the group until leaving in 1993 to pursue a solo career. The band's 1987 album In My Tribe brought the singles "Candy Everybody Wants" and "Trouble Me," and the group's catalog blends jangly guitar rock with folk melodies and socially minded lyrics. Their music has remained a reference point for listeners of alternative and college rock from the 1980s and 1990s.
