The Jazz Room: A Tribute to Celia Cruz

A jazz program in Chicago dedicated to Celia Cruz, the Cuban singer who became one of the central voices of salsa. The show is presented by The Jazz Room at The Den Theatre.

The Jazz Room: A Tribute to Celia Cruz is a jazz program dedicated to the Cuban singer Celia Cruz, who is not a performer in this show. Cruz rose to prominence singing with the Sonora Matancera orchestra in the 1950s and 1960s, then recorded as a solo artist with Fania Records from the 1970s, becoming one of the central figures of salsa. Two of her best-known songs are "Quimbara" and "La vida es un carnaval."

The program suits listeners interested in Afro-Cuban rhythms and in how Cruz's repertoire translates into a jazz setting. Its tribute format means the music honors Cruz's catalog rather than presenting her own recordings.

The concert takes place at The Den Theatre, a Chicago venue that hosts concerts and shows.
