Overview
A tribute concert devoted to the songs of Marvin Gaye, the soul singer whose Motown recordings shaped the genre, performed in Washington by a live band. Not a performance by the original artist.
The Jazz Room: Marvin Gaye in a Night of Soul is a tribute to Marvin Gaye, the American soul singer who recorded for Motown from the early 1960s. Two of Gaye's best-known albums, What's Going On (1971) and Let's Get It On (1973), anchor the material this program draws on, and the set returns to his most popular songs.
On stage, a live band reinterprets Gaye's greatest hits. The music sits within soul, R&B, funk, gospel and reggae, so the evening follows the range of styles that Gaye's recordings moved between. The original artist does not perform.
The show suits listeners who want to hear this repertoire played live and who follow soul music. It takes place at DC Comedy Loft and Bier Baron Tavern in Washington, a venue that hosts concerts and shows, and drinks can be ordered during the evening.
