Overview
Charlie Wilson is a singer whose music draws on R&B, soul, funk, gospel and reggae. This concert brings that catalog to The Theater at MGM National Harbor in National Harbor, Maryland.
Charlie Wilson came to wide attention as the lead vocalist of The Gap Band, the funk group formed in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with the brothers Ronnie Wilson and Robert Wilson. The group's hits include "Outstanding" and "Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)," songs built on funk grooves and the band's rhythmic, horn-driven arrangements. Wilson has also built a solo career in R&B and soul, and the music on this bill spans those styles along with gospel and reggae influences.
The Theater at MGM National Harbor hosts concerts and shows in National Harbor, a waterfront area in Prince George's County, Maryland. The venue is a fitting place for listeners who follow classic funk and soul, from the Gap Band era to Wilson's later R&B recordings, and for anyone interested in a singer whose career has moved across several Black American popular music traditions.
