Overview
Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème, presented as a show at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. It is a staple of the operatic repertoire.
La Bohème is Puccini's opera in four acts, set in the Latin Quarter of Paris and drawn from Henri Murger's stories of young artists living on little money. The story follows a circle of friends, among them the poet Rodolfo, and his love for the seamstress Mimì. Its shifts between light-hearted scenes and tragedy are carried mainly by the score and the voices, so the emotional weight of the show rests on the singing and the orchestra.
The Metropolitan Opera, the company's home at Lincoln Center, hosts opera, concerts and shows throughout the season. Here the work is staged as a full opera, with solo singers, chorus and orchestra working together on the stage and in the pit. The piece suits viewers who want to discover Puccini's writing for the voice as well as those who already know the score well.
