Lara Somogyi

A Los Angeles concert at 2220 Arts + Archives featuring experimental harpist and performer-composer Lara Somogyi, with the New York project Herb Lore and opener Ian MacPhee, on an evening of ambient, drone and field-recording music.

Lara Somogyi is a harpist and contemporary classical performer-composer who works to build a fresh artistic profile for the instrument. Raised in Hawaii and New York, Somogyi trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London and holds an honorary ARAM distinction from that academy. Electronics and pedal effects are woven into a classical foundation in sonic exploration.

Herb Lore, a New York project in ambient, psych-folk and New Age styles, aims at a sense of oneness with the natural world. Its method combines self-gathered field recordings, meditative repetition and restrained improvisation, with Annie Dillard, The Transcendental Painting Group and Gene Wolfe named as guiding touchstones. Ian MacPhee, who opens the bill, merges ambient drone with organic field recordings, shaping them through experimental digital processing, and adds photography and video that Ian captures and edits personally.

The evening takes place at 2220 Arts + Archives, a concert and performance venue in Los Angeles. The bill suits listeners drawn to experimental harp, drone and field-recording music, with Lara Somogyi, Herb Lore and Ian MacPhee on the program.
