Adriana Mater - English National Opera

An English National Opera production of Adriana Mater, staged at the London Coliseum, presenting the opera as a standalone work in its own right.

Adriana Mater is an opera set during a brutal civil war. Its central character, Adriana, falls pregnant after a violent assault by a soldier and decides to raise the son she bears, Yonas, with care and hope for the future, keeping from him the truth about his father. Years later, Yonas learns where he came from and becomes consumed by a desire for revenge, and the drama builds towards Adriana's attempt to persuade him that strength lies in mercy rather than killing.

The production is presented by English National Opera at the London Coliseum, a theatre in London. The material describes it as the second half of a wider narrative arc, paired with Tosca, within a season about resistance, resilience and freedom, but it can also be seen on its own as a stand-alone story. The performance is interpreted in British Sign Language.

The piece will suit audiences interested in opera with a dramatic story about violence, memory and reconciliation.
