Overview
A staging of Gluck's opera Iphigénie en Tauride by English National Opera, presented at the London Coliseum. The production retells the story of two siblings from a dynasty marked by violence.
The opera follows Iphigénie and her brother Oreste, descendants of a Greek family whose history is shaped by bloodshed. Iphigénie has been stranded on a remote island, where she is obliged to serve the wishes of a fearsome ruler and dreams of returning home. Her hope of one day being reunited with Oreste sustains her, but she has come to believe he is dead.
The arrival of a mysterious stranger, who brings news of the collapse of her family, sharpens her fears. The stranger's role in the story is left open by the source material, and the plot turns on whether the situation is as hopeless as it first appears.
The production is presented as a new interpretation of a rarely performed operatic work, offering a fresh reading of the myth for audiences at the London Coliseum, the home of English National Opera in the West End.
