Overview
Angel Bones is an opera staged by English National Opera at the London Coliseum. It tells a dark story of exploitation, complicity and moral collapse.
The piece follows Mr and Mrs X.E, a couple in financial difficulty whose marriage is under strain and who long for a better life. Their fortunes change when they find two injured angels in their garden and take them indoors to nurse them. Care gradually gives way to control, as the couple decide to exploit the beings in pursuit of fame and fortune, cutting their wings and subjecting them to degrading treatment.
The drama asks the audience to look at the uncomfortable truths beneath the surface of the story and to consider their own part in looking away. As the performance is an opera, the story is carried through sung performance on the stage of the London Coliseum, with the cast of Angel Bones taking the roles of the couple and the angels. The venue is one of London's large theatres for opera and ballet, and is the home of English National Opera.
