Overview
A mixed programme of two ballets performed by The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House in London, pairing a work by Jerome Robbins with one by Kenneth MacMillan.
The evening brings together two ballets that differ in mood and musical source, both presented by The Royal Ballet. The first, Dances at a Gathering by Jerome Robbins, is a lively and playful piece set to a selection of piano works by Chopin. The second, Song of the Earth by Kenneth MacMillan, is set to Mahler's orchestral score and is described as sculptural and weighty in its approach.
The programme is a dance evening rather than a narrative production, so the audience follows two separate choreographic worlds: a light, joyful style in the first part and a more serious, profound one in the second. It suits those who want to see classical ballet from two distinct twentieth-century choreographers in a single sitting.
The Royal Opera House, where the programme is staged, is the home of The Royal Ballet and presents ballet, opera and concerts in London.
