Escape from the Rock! Cruise around Alcatraz

A boat cruise from the San Francisco waterfront that circles Alcatraz Island, with an audio commentary built on recollections from former guards and inmates, played on your own device.

This is a sightseeing cruise on San Francisco Bay. The boat heads out from the waterfront, passes beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and goes by Angel Island State Park, then circles Alcatraz Island so you can see the former federal prison from the water.

During the crossing you listen to an audio guide on your own smartphone, tablet or other WiFi-enabled device. The recordings feature historical photographs and draw on accounts from former prison guards and inmates, covering the island's past and the crime stories connected to it. Your ticket lets you skip the box office line and go directly to the gate.

The cruise suits visitors passing through San Francisco and anyone curious about Alcatraz who would rather view the island from the bay. Since the commentary plays on your own device, bring a phone or tablet that can connect to WiFi.
