Overview
A staging of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar at the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in London, directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, following a murderous plot in Rome and the civil war that follows.
Shakespeare's Julius Caesar is presented here as a classical play in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. The action unfolds in the corridors of the Senate in Rome, where a conspiracy takes shape as concern grows over the ambition of Julius Caesar, who holds power as dictator.
When public opinion turns against Caesar's enemies, the political infighting that follows develops into civil war. The production is directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, who previously directed Ghosts at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, and it concentrates on friendship, betrayal and political violence.
The play is a study of loyalty under pressure, as characters must decide whom they can trust and what they owe to the state. The Playhouse is a candlelit venue, so the staging is lit by candles rather than electric light.
