The Seagull - Globe

A staging of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, presented as a classical theatre production in London. The play is the first of Chekhov's four major plays.

The play follows an actress, her lover, her son, a playwright, and an aspiring performer, set in a house by a lake. The material presents it as a play within a play that turns into a story about art, ego and love, and asks what remains once the curtain falls.

Caroline Steinbeis directs this production, and Rory Mullarkey is credited as translator. Both previously worked together on Three Sisters at the same venue. The source material describes the piece as Chekhov's twentieth-century classic and notes that it is inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet.

The show takes place at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, a candlelit indoor theatre within the Shakespeare's Globe complex on the South Bank, which hosts classical theatre and other performances in London. Captioned and audio described performances are offered for some sessions.
